This Friday, Aug. 21 – Leaping Lemurs: An Interactive Zoom Conversation with Dr. Patricia Wright

Aug 7, 2020 | Animal Ambassadors, Community Programs, Events, Nature Center, School Programs

Are you curious about lemurs?  Ranger Eric Powers from the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery (CEED) sure is!  And he has invited lemur expert, Dr. Patricia Wright to join him for a visit with LIVE Ring-tailed lemurs right here on Long Island. Ranger Eric and Dr. Wright will be livecasting from the home of these lemurs at the Long Island Game Farm!

Surrounded by lemurs, Ranger Eric and Dr. Wright will chat about these amazing creatures, Dr. Wright’s book, For The Love of Lemurs, and the 40-minute documentary Island of Lemurs: Madagascar. (View trailer here.)  Ranger Eric will ask Dr. Wright to explain how she became interested in these primates, and became the world’s foremost lemur expert?  She’ll share how she rediscovered a species of Lemur thought to be extinct, and how she has since dedicated her career to protecting these primates that are native to Madagascar, an island halfway around the world.  Dr. Wright and Ranger Eric will discuss the challenges of research and conservation in the era of COVID-19. And they’ll talk about Centre Valbio and the communities where Dr. Wright and her students study lemurs in Madagascar’s amazingly beautiful Ranomafana National Park.

Why is Madagascar the only place in the world where lemurs live in the wild? What’s being done to help the lemurs?  We know you have questions too.  During the talk, be sure to ask your questions in the chat box, and Dr. Wright and Ranger Eric will answer as many as possible toward the end of the program.

The best part about all of this is that simply by purchasing a ticket you’ll be helping lemurs and the people who work to save them!  50% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to WISE Tropics, the non-profit Dr. Wright founded to support programs that save lemurs, safeguard critical habitat, replant rainforests, and educate children and adults about the plight of these endangered animals. The other 50% of your donation will cover the costs of this webinar and allow us to provide additional programming like this at CEED. If you can’t make the actual live conversation, you can still buy a ticket with the minimum donation of $20 and view the conversation after the event.

We hope you join us virtually on August 21st at 1pm EST! We do have a limited number of tickets, so please be sure to register soon!
