Is it a Screech Owl or is it Ranger Eric?

Community Programs, Events, Family, Washington Lodge

Is this sound a real screech owl … or is it Ranger Eric?  It’s so hard to tell.

Eric is an amazing birdcall imitator, and his imitation of screech owl calls is legendary. Screech owls are one of the common owls on Long Island and we often see and hear them on our Owl Prowls. So is this Eric or Screech Owl?  Check below for the answer …

On Friday, Oct. 21, join CEED and Ranger Eric and the Vanderbilt Planetarium a night of owls and meteors …

In addition to owls, there is also a very good chance of seeing shooting stars, as we’ll be right in the middle of the Orionid Meteor Shower.  We encourage you to bring your own telescopes if you wish, binoculars, and even cameras to practice long-exposure photography. If cloudy, we will switch to a digital presentation for your enjoyment.

The recording above is, in fact, a real screech owl.  But come to our Owl Prowl and you’ll see how close Ranger Eric can get.  Close your eyes and you won’t be able to tell!
