CEED Summer Camp

Our program is suited for curious, passionate teens ages 12-16 (Summer Camp ages 5-12). The goal of this program is to teach passionate-nature kids about local environmental topics, ongoing issues, and completing research or creative projects which allow these young adults to start addressing problems from the ground level. Some of last year’s projects include Bob White Quail tracking/monitoring, building a pollinator education station, creating a brand new bird feeder area, and creating self-directed, educational videos about our pollinators. Teaching the younger groups is the other fundamental piece to our program. Regardless of their future careers, synthesizing information and breaking it down into bite-sized information for people to understand is an extremely useful tool in all areas of life. 

Weeks 1-3 @Post Morrow (July 6-24)

The first three weeks of our program are at the Post Morrow Foundation (two minutes down the road from CEED). During this time, we have access to Beaverdam Creek which we access with our kayaks and canoes (optional for children). We also get to explore the local estuary system, a tidal wetland, and even a sprawling meadow

Weeks 4-7 @ CEED & Mama Farm (July 27-August 21)

The last four weeks of our program are at CEED & Mama Farm. During this time, we tend to split our days between CEED & Mama Farm to meet all the farm animals and our rescue animals while exploring the different trails at both locations.   

Sessions run from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are also offering discounts for multi-week registrations.

Summer Leadership Program 2025 camp CEED’s Leadership and Conservation Program is for teens (ages 12-18) who are ready for more than a regular camp experience. The program is designed to help develop future scientists and conservationists, while strengthening their leadership skills, which will help them whatever they do in life. For weeks one through three at Post Morrow and Smith’s Point, teens will not only go out in the field doing some real science, but they will also bring their knowledge back to the younger children, which is why they’ll be wearing STAFF tee-shirts. During this experience, your children will learn to seine and identify organisms, lead hikes, and become a mentor for the younger children. In all the activities, there will be an emphasis on team building and connections. During weeks four through seven, teens will be working on conservation projects at the Washington Lodge and Dennis Puleston Preserve. During this experience, teens will participate in and learn about several conservation projects at CEED and around Long Island, including our Bobwhite Quail project, the Bat project, and tracking Eastern Box Turtle initiatives. Sessions run from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. We are also offering discounts for multi-week registrations. The Leadership and Conservation Program is for young people entering seventh to twelfth grade in the fall of 2025 CEED Summer Nature Camp is for children entering kindergarten to sixth grade in the fall of 2025

The Shannon Kiernan Leadership and Conservation Scholarship is provided by a generous donation from the family and a friend of the family in memory of Shannon. This scholarship provides one child with a multi-week experience in our CEED Leadership and Conservation Program. This opportunity is provided to a teen interested in science who would otherwise not have this opportunity.

Shannon (1/16/78-2/12/06) was a 28-year-old high school physics teacher in New Hampshire when her life was cut short during a snowboarding accident. She had a passion for teaching and for our beautiful environment and could often be found hiking, chasing sunsets, or dancing in a thunderstorm. During her short life, she truly made a difference to her students. Whether it was teaching a junior ranger program at Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia or outdoor adventure classes at Snow Mountain Ranch in Colorado….Shannon loved the great outdoors and sharing that love with her students.

Weekly Schedule Highlights

Freshwater Ecosystems Week: July 7-11 at Post Morrow Foundation

Science Highlights:

  • Collect and Identify local macroinvertebrates and plant species
  • Explore the freshwater ecosystem via canoe and/or kayak
  • Age fish using microscopes
  • Go fishing and identify local species
  • Fish dissection and fish printing
  • Meet local fisheries biologists and learn about their work/career 

 

Leadership:

  • Teach younger students each day about the freshwater habitat

Culmination Project:

  • Tic tac toe creation – 6 options

Students will be able to:

  • Recall local fish species
  • Describe at least 3 structures of a fish and their functions
  • Identify various macroinvertebrate species, analyze data, and formulate a conclusion on health of a water body based on the organisms present
  • Measure the age of fish using scales and a microscope, analyze data, and formulate a conclusion for future fish stock management. 
  • Safely cast a fishing pole

 

Water Quality & Shellfish: July 14 - 18 at Post Morrow Foundation

Science Highlights:

  • Perform water qualities studies to determine health of local water bodies
  • Plankton lab
  • Water testing lab on various water sources
  • Clam dissection
  • Shellfish and water quality experiment
  • Bioaccumulation game/activity
  • Podcast creation that focuses on water pollution, HABs and prevention
  • Survey local river to determine levels of nitrogen pollution
  • Canoe/kayak local waterbody

Leadership:

  • Teach younger students each day about the importance of clean water and how to prevent water pollution

Culmination Project:

  • Create podcast, video, Pictochart to explain water pollution causes, ways to prevent it and more

    • Perform water quality tests, analyze data, and formulate a conclusion on health of a water body 
    • Model water pollution through Enviroscape
    • Identify plant and animal plankton species
    • Construct a water filter to purify water
    • Evaluate which species of shellfish is best a purifying water
    • Analyze data to determine which species of shellfish is best at filtrating water
    • Recall structures of a shellfish species that help filter water through a clam dissection

Marine Week: July 21 - 25 at Post Morrow Foundation

Birds of Long Island Week: July 28 - August 1 at CEED and Mama Farm

  • Participate in a citizen science project with the Audubon Society and Cornell University’s Bird Lab

  • Participate in monarch butterfly citizen science tagging project through Monarch Watch

  • Identify many saltwater fish

  • Mural to post at CEED to summarize all learning experiences relating to fishing on Long Island

  • Identify at least 3 different saltwater fish
  • Describe how organisms have adapted to live in the ocean
  • Demonstrate how to cook using local seafood resources
  • Recall fishing regulations and rules for the marine environment
  • Demonstrate how to properly use a baitcasting fishing rod
  • Demonstrate how to tie at least one knot for line to hook
  • Describe what sustainable fishing is and how to attain it

Do you offer Lunch?

We cater Lunch for Summer Camp through Cafe Castello. For those interested in signing up, CEED will send out more information in March. 

Do you offer Scholarships?

What does a regular day look like?

As long as the weather is safe and agreeable, we spend all of our time outside. We typically start each day out with a hike and will then enter into either a science activity or an art activity – we usually leave it up to the interests of the kids to guide these moments. 

Am I able to attend just a few days a week?

We offer our registration blocks on a weekly basis.

My children are in different grades, will they be placed in the same Group?

We typically separate our groups into grades K-2 and 3-6.  If you have a preference and would like your child to be placed in a different group, you can talk to the camp director at the beginning of the camp week or send an email.

My child can’t swim, will they have to swim?

There is no swimming at CEED’s camp. Whenever we visit Smith Point, we have the kids only go into ankle depth.

Do you have before or after care available?

Yes we have before and after care – registration is available on the registration page.

Do you have a full week or sibling discounts?

We offer a $25 full week discount and a $5 sibling discount for each day.

Do you have any multi-week or sibling discounts?

We offer a $15 multi-week discount for each week and a $15 sibling discount for each week.
