Wait ‘Til You See Their Eyes!

Parents and grandparents are always asking kids, “How was your day?” and “What did you do today?” Too often, the answers are a flat “Good” and “Not much.” Ranger Eric Powers, of CEED’s Wonders of Wildlife Summer Nature Experience, says one of the joys of a summer program comes at the end of the day when kids are being picked up and you can hear one wide-eyed child after another saying, “You won’t believe what we saw today!”
That awe, and the desire to share it, is what CEED’s Summer Experience is all about. Our goal is to get kids outdoors, connecting to nature up close and in-hand. Ranger Eric has designed the weeklong (July 15-19) program so each day is about experiencing another major group of animal wonders. Bugs and slugs one day, amphibians and fish the next, reptiles and birds, and finally mammals. Children create their own touch tanks with the creatures they find, and then lovingly release them when the experience is over.
“Its great to watch kids go from squeamish to confident,” Eric says. “Kids love to interact with animals. And contrary to stereotypes, girls are often the first to jump in!”
