Shiitake Mushrooms on Logs

Community Programs, Gardening, Nature Talks

Sunday, November 17, 2024, 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM

Outdoor cultivation on logs is a time-honored and sustainable method for producing a number of species of gourmet mushrooms that are appropriate for home growers. This workshop will discuss the fundamentals of log cultivation, including the appropriate pairing of mushroom species and wood type; the correct timing of wood harvest; inoculation techniques; storage of inoculated logs and staging of logs for fruiting and harvest. Participants will inoculate a 3’ length of maple or oak with shiitake.

For an additional charge of $15, you can take home one of these cultures (limited to 12 spots).

Workshop leader Conor Cash is a truly unique mushroom educator and artist. His mushroom series is made up of 6 educational workshops ranging from foraging to growing mushrooms. At the end of his series, Conor is going to hold an art exhibit at CEED.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the NY State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York  State Legislature.
