Famed Children’s Book Author Elizabeth Shreeve to Your School

CEED is partnering with award winning author Elizabeth Shreeve to offer two special in-school programs in January and February 2025. Elizabeth will talk with your students about being a science writer. She’ll also discuss her book titled The Upside-Down Book of Sloths, a Junior Library Guild Selection, or her newest The Oddball Book of Armadillos. CEED’s Ranger Eric will accompany Elizabeth with some of our animal ambassadors to help children understand the environment in which sloths and armadillos live.

This unique program combines literature, science, live animals, and a successful author to inspire your students! This is a limited program as Elizabeth will only be in the area for a few weeks. Choose which book you would like Elizabeth to feature, and email info@ceedli.org to schedule a date.

The Wonders of Spring Migration

Wednesday, May 1, 2024, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

A glimpse of movement, a flash of color, a magical melody heard but once a year. Get ready for spring migration season with an overview of Long Island’s most sought after songbirds.  Many North American songsters are soon to arrive so get acquainted (or reacquainted!) with these colorful birds through photos featuring Long Island photographers. Katie will review the field marks and songs that are important for identification, talk about how to break down these songs into easier and more manageable learning groups, and highlight where to go to find these feathered beauties.

Evolution of Birds with John Potente

Evolution of Birds with John Potente

Evolution of Birds with John Potente

Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

In recent decades, we’ve learned that birds are actually the one surviving branch of the dinosaurs that dominated earth for hundreds of millions of years.  How did we get from dinosaurs to chickadees, eagles, and birds of paradise?  John Potente is a legend among Long Island nature lovers for his passion, his engaging presentations, and his wonder at the powers of nature. John has taken a deep dive into a study of the evolution of our winged friends and he’ll share what he’s learned with you.

Participants can also experience an art workshop to explore different bird features and shapes to create a unique bird for a specific habitat.

Natural Wonders Walk with Ranger Eric

Natural Wonders Walk with Ranger Eric

Natural Wonders Walk with Ranger Eric

Cancelled – Saturday, January 27, 2024 · 10 – 11:30pm a.m.

Our apologies.  The nature walk with Ranger Eric for Saturday, Jan. 27 has been cancelled.  Please join us for the February walk to be announced soon.

Join Ranger Eric on an exploratory walk every month.  This month, we’ll think about animals and Long Island winters.

We have a wonderful diversity of wildlife that live on Long Island, but what do they do about winter? Do all birds migrate? Do all mammals hibernate? And do any animals migrate to Long Island for winter? We will start with a fun game inside about animals in winter before heading out for a hike in search of wildlife at CEED. Please dress for the weather and wear sturdy footwear.

For more information or any questions, please email info@ceedli.org or call 631-803-6780.
