Self Discovery: This Is Me

Self Discovery: This Is Me

Self Discovery: This Is Me

SATURDAY, AUGUST 26 · 2 PM EDT

INSPIRED presents This is Me, a FREE event celebrating self-discovery through the Arts at CEED. Join Jo-Ann Wilson and accomplished musicians along with new artists, poets, and dancers. It’s free, and no registration is required.

This is Me is an original production celebrating authenticity and self-love. This dancers, and inspirational speakers with combined careers spanning 50 years. Performers include accomplished musicians —some who have worked with Bob Marley, Susan Tedeschi, Wyclef Jean, and others — and up-and-coming artists and students. Food will be provided by Island Empanada.

The event is hosted by CEED and presented by INSPIRED, an organization dedicated to helping children and young adults — especially those from underserved communities — achieve success through the arts. According to its founder, Jo-Ann Wilson, LMSW, the purpose of the show is to encourage confidence and challenge negative self-talk. “We are not the sum of our past mistakes or the balance in our bank accounts,” she said. This is Me is an invitation for self-exploration, self-celebration, and making connections.”

In case of rain, the concert will be held indoors at the Washington Lodge.

Join us!

This is Me is partially funded by the New York State Council of the Arts, administered by the Huntington Arts Council, Inc. and the County of Suffolk. CEED is located at 287 South Country Road, Brookhaven NY 11719. They can be reached at (631) 803-6780.

Still Time to Sign Up for Camp

Adventure Awaits!

It is still possible to register for any or all of CEED’s Summer Nature Adventure Camp weeks 4-8, July 24 through August 25. Weeks two and three were maxed out, however, so if you want to ensure that your child has a spot in this outdoor adventure, including kayaking, don’t delay.  Use the button below, or email info@ceedli.org if you have questions.

We’re almost halfway through the summer, but there’s still time …

Kayaks and Beach Day

One of the wonderful advantages of our merger with the Carmans  CEED Nature Adventure Camp is that we’ll be including kayaking on the Carmans River. Add that to Beach Day in weeks 2-4, Farm and Nature camp during weeks 5 and 6, and a Science and Engineering focus in weeks 7 and 8, and it’s clear there is something to make every child fall in love with nature and being outdoors. Camp begins on July 3rd, and goes all the way through August 25th.

Here are three short videos that show what CEED’s summer camp is like:

No matter which week you choose, you can count on your child coming home tired, maybe a little dirty, and full of stories about the wonders of nature. Many weeks book completely, so don’t delay.

  • If you would like to help sponsor a child who couldn’t otherwise afford this program, email info@ceedli.org. And thank you!
  • As sessions fill, you can be added to our waiting list by calling 631-803-6780 or emailing info@ceedli.org.
  • We are also offering aftercare from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. for families who need that. Email info@ceedli.org for more information.

Bobwhite Quail Releases 2023

Bobwhite Quail Releases 2023

Bobwhite Quail Releases 2023

Next to hatching, this is the most exciting time of year for the Bobwhite Quail Project.  It’s time for Quail Releases.

The goal is to release these birds into their historical environments on Long Island. They’ll be graduating in July and starting their new lives in the wild. Join me, CEED Biologist, “Ranger” Eric Powers, founder of the Bobwhite Quail Project, as we release our juvenile quail back into their natural habitat. There, they will fill their ecological role of eating small, ground-dwelling bugs in our fields and forests, including a whole lot of ticks too!

Additionally, you can help by keeping house cats indoors and away from the Quail, or making a donation of time or money to help support CEED, the nature center that leads this important project. Release Dates and locations:

  • Wednesday July 19, 10am: Mt Sinai Elem School at Brookhaven State Park. 75 BWQ
  • Tuesday July 25, 11am: Town of North Hempstead at Hempstead Harbor Beach Trail. 50 BWQ from Clark Botanic Gardens + 100 BWQ from Smithtown Pens.
  • Tuesday July 25, 4:30pm: CEED at South Trail (Dennis Puleston Preserve). 100 BWQ from Smithtown Pens.
  • Thursday July 27, 1pm: Town of Brookhaven at the Longwood Estate. 100 BWQ.
  • Saturday July 29, 10am: CEED Release at Caleb Smith State Park. ALL REMAINING BWQ, est 500-600 BWQ. Those of you who participated in this project and donated Quail are encouraged to bring an animal carrier to this release in order to receive a small covey of Quail to have your own private release with just you and your class or library patrons, in another part of Caleb Smith State Park.

I hope everyone can make it to at least one of the releases! I hope to see you there.

Eric Powers, CEED Site & Program Director

All About Long Island Crabs: A Science and Art Experience

All About Long Island Crabs: A Science and Art Experience

All About Long Island Crabs: A Science and Art Experience

SUNDAY, JULY 30 · 1 – 3 PM EDT

Join crab experts, Marine Biologist Dr. Jeffrey Levinton, and Marine Biology Ph.D. student Hannah Craft in a discussion about wonders of crabs.

One of the most successful groups of animals, crabs are found all over the world, in the oceans, but also in fresh water, and even sometimes on land. This is a fabulous opportunity to learn about the crabs found on Long Island and have the opportunity to discuss and ask questions with two people who have extensive knowledge of these fascinating creatures.

After the conversation, Join artist Jack Dambrosio in a printmaking workshop to create cards using shells, crab carapaces, and other beach items.

The event is free.  If you can afford it, we ask for a $10 donation per person or a $20 donation per family to help support and continue these opportunities. But there is no requirement to do so.  Please join us.
