How to Speak Insect, with NatGeo’s Dr. Gabby Wild

For children ages 4-12, join us for another day of fun with Dr. Gabby Wild! On May 7th at 10:00 a.m. What are those bees talking about? What does it mean when butterflies fly around each other? Spark your child’s love of insects by hearing about Dr. Wild’s wild adventures and encounters. After that, children will explore stations including a nature walk looking for insects, planting a flower to attract butterflies, helping build CEED’s bee house and more! Come experience, discover, and learn more about insects.

All proceeds benefit CEED and the D. Gabby Wild Foundation

How the Sun can save the Earth

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2023 AT 5:30 PM

This Earth Day, join Charlie Eder from Vanderbilt Planetarium for a fabulous interactive presentation on how we can make a difference. Charlie is calling his presentation “Renewed Climate: Learn how human activities are impacting Earth’s climate and what we can do to protect our planet.” Discover the power of renewable energy and (weather permitting) observe the Sun through a solar telescope.

This program is free, so come and learn about exciting progress being made to develop renewable energy – solar and wind – that comes from the sun.

We’ll meet at CEED, 287 South Country Road, Brookhaven Hamlet, NY.

SUNDAY, APRIL 30, 2023 AT 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM

Dan Welden will be conducting a Mini Solarplate Workshop at CEED. Using ‘nature’ as a motif, artists will be able to create images reflecting the beautiful grounds of CEED! The three hour event will involve instruction on the Solarplate process. Final art will be considered for an exhibition by each artist.

Kayaks and Beach Day

One of the wonderful advantages of our merger with the Carmans  CEED Nature Adventure Camp is that we’ll be including kayaking on the Carmans River. Add that to Beach Day in weeks 2-4, Farm and Nature camp during weeks 5 and 6, and a Science and Engineering focus in weeks 7 and 8, and it’s clear there is something to make every child fall in love with nature and being outdoors. Camp begins on July 3rd, and goes all the way through August 25th.

Here are three short videos that show what CEED’s summer camp is like:

No matter which week you choose, you can count on your child coming home tired, maybe a little dirty, and full of stories about the wonders of nature. Many weeks book completely, so don’t delay.

  • If you would like to help sponsor a child who couldn’t otherwise afford this program, email info@ceedli.org. And thank you!
  • As sessions fill, you can be added to our waiting list by calling 631-803-6780 or emailing info@ceedli.org.
  • We are also offering aftercare from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. for families who need that. Email info@ceedli.org for more information.

CEED Nature Adventure Camp – 8 Weeks July 3rd – August 25th

For children entering grades Kindergarten-7th Grade in September 2023

(for Teens, see our Leadership Program)

CEED Nature Adventure Camp is expanding again! Your child can now attend for one week or eight weeks, from July 3 through August 25. This spring, we welcomed Bob Polcha to the CEED team as Camp Director.  Bob has decades of experience running summer camps in our community.

The first four weeks in July will be at Post Morrow Foundation’s property on Bay Road in Brookhaven, where children will explore Beaver Dam Creek, Bellport Bay, the estuary, and surrounding woodlands.

Beach Day! New this year.  Weeks 2-4 will include Beach day at Smith’s Point County Park on Fridays!

Farm and Nature. During weeks 5 and 6, we will be exploring Mama Farm and CEED’s Washington Lodge preserve.  Your child will not only experience nature these weeks at CEED, but will also learn what it’s like to live on a farm.

Science and Engineering.  Also new this year, weeks 7 and 8 will be all about nature-related science and engineering at CEED.  Children will be using our natural environment as a laboratory.  Science and engineering are happening all around us, not just in the classroom.  We might build a fishing pole with a paperclip and dental floss or look at plankton through a microscope. Your child will look at the natural world in a fun and exciting new way after this experience!

No matter which week you choose, you can count on your child coming home tired, maybe a little dirty, and full of stories about the wonders of nature. Many weeks book completely, so don’t delay.
