Check out our marine aquarium

We have moved our small marine aquarium to a larger tank and incorporated many fascinating creatures as well as equipment donated by Ron Petrozzo, a member of the Long Island Aquarium Society. It’s a nice addition to our newly opened Marine Hall. Next time you visit the Washington Lodge, check it out!

Wavemakers Build a Canoe

It’s exciting to see the Peace Canoe being built by our Wavemakers taking shape.  The young people are working with volunteers at Carmans River Maritime Center (CRMC)to build the 18-foot-long canoe for use in CEED’s on-the-water environmental programs.  CRMC President Hank Maust is enjoying this project.  “This is an exciting first ‘joint venture’ between our two organizations, and the kids are putting a lot of energy into the project.”

We treasure our special partnerships with community organizations like CRMC.  The way Hank and the team at the CRMC have welcomed our Wavemakers is priceless.  One of our goals with the Wavemakers program is to provide opportunities to become active in the community.  Seeing our children learn from master boatbuilders and realize the importance of hard work, dedication, and precision is rewarding.

The kids are truly embracing this opportunity and look forward to testing the canoe in the water. And CEED is looking forward to having this special vessel as part of our nature connection equipment!

Saturday, March 9, 2024 · 9am – 12pm EST

Join us to explore winter birds in a field habitat.

This three-hour workshop will advance our ability to find and identify birds. This is the last of a series of three and will take place at local Suffolk County Farm. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair of ours to take a look at the local waterfowl here for the winter months.

Each workshop will begin indoors with a short classroom session. Then we head outdoors to explore a local Long Island ecosystem.

It is a great gift for the holidays!

Winter Seed Sowing Workshop

Get a jump on spring planting! Winter sowing Is the process of planting seeds outdoors in a container during the winter months. The specifically modified milk jug remains outdoors until the seedlings emerge in the spring. This method protects the seeds from animals and harsh weather, but the exposure to colder temperatures breaks dormancy and the seeds germinate.
