On January 26, CEED was honored to be the recipient of a generous donation of PPE masks for adults and children from the Rotary Club of Bellport, presented by club President, Lorraine Kuehn.

The gift is part of a program by the Rotary to distribute eight million PPE masks. A recent press release by the Rotary Club of Bellport described the program:

On January 13, the “Million Masks Challenge, Take 2” traveled from New England to New York to Long Island’s Rotary District 7255. This Northeast regional Rotary project began with Mr. Ted Rossi, a Rotarian in Connecticut and the CEO of the Rossi Group, a well-known leader in the American hardwood industry. Mr. Rossi turned to his team with international logistics and sourcing capabilities and was able to obtain over 8 million PPE masks to be distributed throughout Vermont, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New York. Rotary District 7255, under the leadership of District Governor, Jacquelyn Yonick, obtained 350,000 adults masks and 16,000 children masks to be distributed to 41 Rotary Clubs in Queens, Brooklyn, Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Members of these Rotary Clubs then redistributes the masks to those in need within their respective communities.

CEED is working hard to maintain good COVID safety protocols and was chosen by The Rotary Club of Bellport to receive several boxes of adult and children’s size masks to ensure masks are always available for CEED visitors and program participants. Lorraine Kuehn personally delivered the masks to CEED’s as part of the local club’s commitment to the Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.” They are delivering 4,800 masks to soup kitchens, youth and adult shelters, libraries, and children educational organizations throughout the Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven community. Thank you!

We’re proud to announce noteworthy awards for CEED Program & Site Director Ranger Eric Powers and CEED board member Veronica Weeks!

CEED’s favorite biologist and naturalist, Ranger Eric, has been named 2020 Environmentalist of the Year by the Long Island Sierra Club! The Sierra Club is one of the world’s largest environmental organizations, and the Long Island Group has been a leader in protecting nature in our region. The Sierra Club’s mission is to “explore, enjoy and protect the planet,” so it’s not hard to see why they value Ranger Eric as highly as we do. Congratulations, Eric!

In the very same week that we learned about Eric’s award, it was announced that one of CEED’s most active board members, Veronica Weeks, had won the 2020 Anton Banko Award for Excellence in Elementary Science Teaching, from the Science Teachers Association of New York State. This prestigious award is given after evaluation by a three-judge panel based on recommendations from teachers and administrators, student performance, as well as an essay on teaching methods.

Congratulations to Eric and Veronica! We are honored to have you on the CEED team!
