Your Students Catch Tropical Fish off Long Island Beaches

A seining field trip to one of our local beaches is an experience your students will long remember. And fall seining trips are the best! The Gulf Stream carries tropical fish larvae to Long Island in the spring. These tiny fish grow and mature over the summer, and we catch them in our seine nets in September and October. This gives your students an opportunity to catch fish they’d otherwise never see on Long Island. And water temperatures in September and early October are warmer than in June.

In addition to seining, your students will also learn about beach ecology and other important biology subjects. Seining dates in September and October are limited. Email info@ceedli.org to schedule a date for your students.

Famed Children’s Book Author Elizabeth Shreeve to Your School

CEED is partnering with award winning author Elizabeth Shreeve to offer two special in-school programs in January and February 2025. Elizabeth will talk with your students about being a science writer. She’ll also discuss her book titled The Upside-Down Book of Sloths, a Junior Library Guild Selection, or her newest The Oddball Book of Armadillos. CEED’s Ranger Eric will accompany Elizabeth with some of our animal ambassadors to help children understand the environment in which sloths and armadillos live.

This unique program combines literature, science, live animals, and a successful author to inspire your students! This is a limited program as Elizabeth will only be in the area for a few weeks. Choose which book you would like Elizabeth to feature, and email info@ceedli.org to schedule a date.
