Brook Trout in Lake Colden Prove We Can Heal the Earth

Brook Trout in Lake Colden Prove We Can Heal the Earth

Brook Trout in Lake Colden Prove We Can Heal the Earth

Not long ago, I read a heartening article in New York State Conservationist magazine. The article was about the discovery of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) in Lake Colden, a small lake in the High Peaks Wilderness of Adirondack Park in upstate New York.  Finding brook trout in a remote, high mountain lake might not seem that remarkable. But acid rain over the second half of the 20th century made the water of many of the Adirondack lakes, especially the high elevation ones, so acidic that fish couldn’t live in them. According to the article, when biologists looked for fish in Lake Colden in 1970, they found not a single one. The same was true all the way through the last survey in 2011.

So when a fisherman reported that he had caught a brook trout in Lake Colden last summer, it got the attention of the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Investigation soon discovered the brook trout were back. They apparently recolonized on their own by traveling upstream from the brooks and streams that lead out of Lake Colden.

The return of New York’s state fish is good news for Lake Colden, but the larger picture is even more important. Testing shows that the acidity of Lake Colden and other Adirondack lakes has dropped and is continuing to drop. They are once again becoming suitable for fish.

All the efforts to reduce sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from power plants have paid off.  It took a couple of decades, but the return of brook trout to Lake Colden is proof.  What we do matters!

That’s why I am especially distressed when I read that our U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is relaxing the emissions protections that have done so much to make the air cleaner – and make high mountain lakes livable for brook trout again.

We are making progress.  We are learning how to heal the earth.  It makes no sense to go backwards.

Conversation with Carl Safina and Isabella Rossellini

Carl Safina is a MacArthur Fellow, a world-renowned ecologist, and one of America’s most popular writers about nature. And Isabella Rossellini is an actress, activist, filmmaker, author, and animal lover who is treasured in our community and around the globe. On Sunday, September 27th, at 2 pm, these two luminaries will sit socially distanced at CEED’s backyard, and chat about animal behavior, their travels and adventures, and how to save the natural world.

In addition, they’ll take questions from you and a small audience (40 people total)!

After the discussion, you will have the opportunity to purchase a signed copy of Carl’s new book Becoming Wild: How Animal Cultures Raise Families, Create Beauty, and Enjoy Peace. This is a unique chance to be a part of a conversation with two of the most passionate voices for animals, wildlife, and conservation. We hope you join us on Sunday, September 27th, at 2 pm.

The fee for this program, which will benefit CEED, is $25. Purchase of Becoming Wild is additional. Click below to register.

Nature of Science: A Series for Kids

Nature of Science: A Series for Kids

Nature of Science: A Series for Kids

Are you looking for science and nature classes that will provide hands-on experiences to help your child succeed this school year? CEED is launching an innovative program for your child called the Nature of Science, where your child will be immersed in a unique inquiry-based learning environment. Each five-week session will be aligned with the foundations required for your child to learn science, English, language arts, mathematics, and sometimes social studies.  Developed and taught by two experienced educators, with curriculum developed under the guidance of scientists and experts in the field of education, Nature of Science will provide your child with an exceptional educational experience.

Your child will learn through authentic scientific projects and activities with our esteemed educators Fanny Kleisler and Julia Todorov. Fanny and Julia will take your child on an interactive journey to explore and discover….

  • the natural world up close
  • how animals, plants, and humans interact within different ecosystems.
  • life cycles and life’s processes
  • different ways to appreciate and conserve our precious resources and thriving ecosystems, and more!

With the opportunity to think like a scientist, investigate and appreciate nature, learn what it takes to be a good steward for the environment and give back to nature through conservation projects, your child will be better prepared to understand our fragile planet.

CEED has two five-week sections available, one for Grades 1-3 on Wednesdays from 10:30-12:30 and a second for Grades 4-6 on Wednesdays from 1:30-3:30.

Session 1 for both sections begins on Wednesday, September 23, 2020

Some of the workshops will be at CEED’s Washington Lodge location, while others may be onsite at the bay or local stream. Group size is limited to 15 children, so we anticipate these sections will fill quickly.  We will maintain a waiting list and might add sections if there is sufficient interest. Register today by clicking on the registration link below or checking it out on our website.
